Number 26 has a special meaning for Indonesian because there were some accidents happen on 26th. The first was tsunami in Aceh which happened on December 26th 2004, the second one was earth quake in Yogyakarta on May 26th 2006, and the last one was Merapi explosion on 26th October 2010.
It was a cloudy morning when I woke up on Tuesday, 26th October 2010. I thought that it would rain but I was very surprised when I realized that it was a dust rain. I waked my friend who has TV in my boarding house and asked her to turn on the TV. Than it was a Merapi Explosion at least there were three times explosions. The explosion sprayed out vulkanik materials as high as 1,5 km and it followed by hot cloud which was called “wedus gembel”. It attacked Kaliadem, Kepuharjo village, Cangkringan subdistrict, Sleman. It caused 43 people dead include “Mbah Marijan”, the guard of Mt. Merapi who were very well-though-of society surrounding Mt. Merapi.
The raising status of Mt. Merapi from “normal” to be “wary” was recommended by BPPTK Yogyakarta on September 20th 2010. On October 21th the status changed to be “alert”. An evacuation has to be prepared. On October 25th, BPPTK Yogyakarta recommended the increasing status of Mt. Merapi to be “sharp-sighted” and determined that the secure zone was 10 km from the top of M. Merapi.
It was the first time of big accident I got in Yogyakarta. Although in my boarding house and campus had no big effect of the explosion, I fell very afraid in this situation because I was far from my family. I tried to overcome my frightened and thought that everything will be okay.
Friday, October 26th 2010 my friend woke me up at 02.00 a.m. She told me that Mt. Merapi exploded again and it is bigger than before. There was a sand rain in my boarding house and we could hear the thundering of Mt. Merapi. It’s very scared. All of the people in my boarding house woke up because of it. We can not sleep any more.
BPPTK determined that the secure zone was 20 km from Mt. Merapi. But it was too late. There were so many victims because of the explosion. It could be a bigger explosion so the society had been evacuated as soon as possible.
In the morning I got information that the examination was canceled because of the enable situation. My parent asked me to go home because they felt concerned about me. Actually I want to go home by bus but the street in Magelang was closed. My friends and I decided to go home by motorcycle by way another traffic lane although the situation was very bad.
It was the most scared journey I ever had. The way through the journey was covered by sand and dust. In the way, the rain came and made the street was very slick. One of my friends fell from his motorcycle because of the slick street. The journey from Yogyakarta to Banjarnegara that commonly spends 3-4 ours, at the time we spent almost 7 ours.
I came back to Yogyakarta at Sunday because the examination would be continued. But in the night after I arrive in Yogyakarta, I got an information that the examination was delayed until 2 weeks later. It was impossible if I went home again to Banjarnegara at the time because it was too dangerous.
I was offered to be a volunteer of Merapi explosion. Actually my parents didn’t allow me to be a volunteer but I could make sure to them that I would be fine. I became a volunteer in DODIKlatpur and SD N 2 Pluneng, Klaten during one week. I taught the children of evacuation there. It was the greatest experience I ever had. I learned many things there. I learn to be a good teacher, and a good friend for them. I learned how to teach well and tried to heal their trauma by playing with them. The condition of the evacuation was very bad. They didn’t get any suitable facilities and their main requirements. They had to hold out their life with the patch up facilities. I felt to be the most fortune person there. I hope this accident can over as soon as possible.
